While there is no doubt social media websites can generate a lot of free traffic to websites, there is something that needs to be said about how social media marketing is being done. Some marketers simply do not know how to do it. 

When you say “social media marketing“, most people think it’s all about sharing your content until your audience becomes nauseous. However, sharing content is really just one part of the equation. There is actually what you would call the holy trinity of social media marketing. These are content, audience gathering, and content sharing. 

We all know that not all content have viral value. And so it goes, if you have social media accounts, you need to brainstorm the type of content you are going to publish. Videos that tell personal stories that are touching on a visceral level are always winners. As are funny pictures and controversial content. No matter which type of content you publish, though, make sure that it enhances your brand. Marketing on Twitter, Facebook, and other similar platforms is really nothing more than a numbers game, that is, the more followers you have, the more eyeballs will see your message. Not everyone is going to see your message, however, a Twitter account that has a thousand followers will have better chances of making their content viral than an account that only has ten followers. That said, as you are creating content, make sure that you are also doing everything you can to gather as many followers as possible. 

There are several ways to do this. Do SEO on your website so you can rank for your most important keywords. Then ask your visitors to connect with you on Facebook. Or you could do a campaign on the different ad networks like Google Adwords and Facebook ads and bring them to your Facebook account. And there are many other ways that you can gather more friends and followers. Just remember, the more followers you have, the better the chances of your content going viral, provided, of course, that the content is viral-worthy. 

Once you have the content and the followers, make sure to share your content more than once. But don’t do it every hour, though. A smart strategy for sharing your content is to publish it twice during the first day. Publish it the next day. Publish it the next week and then the next month. As you do this, though, make sure that you change the accompanying text. There are people who will notice that you have been sharing the same post over and over again, and it may seem like you are spamming, which might lead them to unfollow you. 

You can simply share the title of the content the first time. But the second time around, make sure you ask a question or write something that tells people what the post is all about.
